About the Pacific Northwest Canadian Studies Consortium
History and Mission
The Pacific Northwest Canadian Studies Consortium (PNWCSC) was organized in late 1986 and early 1987 at meetings in Seattle and Friday Harbor, Washington, involving representatives of 16 universities and colleges in the Pacific Northwestern United States. The organization’s Secretariat is at the University of Washington. Its Executive Director is Fr. Michael Treleaven, S.J., of Gonzaga University, and its Associate Director is Daniel Turbeville III of Eastern Washington University.
The mission of the PNWCSC is to facilitate the development of Canadian Studies at institutions of higher education in the Pacific Northwest, and to enhance cooperation, joint programming, and information sharing among Canadian Studies programs and faculty in the Pacific region.
In the Northwest, the Consortium acts as a clearinghouse for information about Canadian Studies programs and faculties, sponsors and organizes conferences and training activities, provides technical assistance to Canadian Studies programs and faculties, enhances the acquisition and sharing of library resources, organizes faculty and student exchange programs, encourages research on Canada, establishes and maintains appropriate relations with other Canadian Studies organizations, and secures funding to support achievement of the above listed activities as well as other activities deemed appropriate by the Consortium's Board of Directors.
PNWCSC membership consists of 47 universities and colleges in Alaska, the Yukon, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, and three regional statutory organization. A Board of Directors, consisting of one representative elected by each state/province in the consortium; the director; associate director; library representative and the secretariat govern the Consortium.
